VLS served as the show lighting integrator, tasked with furnishing and installing all theatrical lighting elements for the eclectic space. This project was led by Bryan Mravec from VLS, who described the experience as “amazing and unforgettable.” The magic of Meow Wolf Grapevine lies not just in its artistic vision but in the collaborative efforts of the teams involved.
Working closely with the creative team at Meow Wolf and lighting designer Chris Werner, VLS formed a show lighting team that operated like a cohesive family. The synergy created by their roundtable collaboration allowed the expertise of each member to shine through, resulting in a mesmerizing lighting design.
Ron Kline, VLS Account Executive, was instrumental in bridging the gap between creative vision and technical execution. His unique dual background as both a designer and integrator was critical in navigating the unusual challenges posed by the space. Meow Wolf Grapevine, with its unconventional layout and absence of right angles, required innovative solutions that pushed the boundaries of lighting integration.
The installation required over a mile of LED pixel tape, utilizing products from leading brands such as ETC, Chauvet, S4, Elation, and Color Kinetics. These advanced technologies helped transform the space into a truly otherworldly experience, immersing visitors in a vibrant, multi-sensory journey.
Ron Kline temporarily relocated from Vermont to Texas for the project, bringing his dog, cat, and guinea pig along for the ride. The Texas heat was an adjustment, but it underscored the dedication of the VLS team to making this project a success. For Bryan, the experience went beyond work—it was an opportunity to contribute to something extraordinary while forging lifelong friendships.
Meow Wolf’s mission is not just to create art but to democratize access to it, fostering inclusivity and invigorating the creative economy. Grapevine’s installation features over 100 artists, standing as a testament to this ethos. VLS is proud to have played an integral role in this transformative journey, contributing technical expertise that helped create an immersive lighting experience far beyond traditional illumination.
The Real Unreal, Meow Wolf’s fourth exhibition, was recently honored with the prestigious Lumen West Award for Control Innovation by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Los Angeles. This Award of Excellence reflects the creativity, dedication, and innovation brought to life by a stellar team, including key contributors from VLS such as Chris Werner, Ron Kline, and Bryan Mravec.
